Mike Rowe once described the test he had to take for a job as a host on a TV shopping show. He was handed a pencil and asked to talk about it, indefinitely. That's what the job entailed, and that's what an applicant had to be able to do.
Apparently, TV news channel hosts have to do the same thing, and it must not be that easy as Fox News Channel always assigns the job to Shepherd Smith when there's day long coverage of a single event. Problem is, since he doesn't have a script and isn't required to promote any product, he makes it a Shepherd Smith opinion piece.
We probably remember how bad his reporting was during the hurricane Katrina coverage. Now we have him trying to cover the murders of the police officers in Baton Rouge. Turns out he felt entitled to criticize Bobby Jindal for saying "All lives matter." Not everyone was thrilled. See ‘Shepard Smith is a damn idiot!’ Unforgivable fight with Jindal after ambush has people calling Fox News!.
John Ziegler provided a clue for why the networks do that in By the Way, I Am Right About the News Media Being Afraid to Offend Blacks With the Truth.
If only those talking heads could stick to reporting the news and quit trying to shape the news.
