If we want a merit based immigration system then an important test would be whether the applicant can meet deadlines. Also, if they've overstayed and gone underground, whether or not to give interviews on TV would be another test.
So when we see this headline: ICE nabs young ‘dreamer’ applicant after she speaks out at a news conference, we have to wonder if this is the sort of immigrant who will be a productive resident and not just another community organizer.
Prediction: Daniela Vargas will get to stay. And she'll become a Democrat party symbol. She'll be the Sandra Fluke of illegal immigrants.
Meanwhile, this brings up a recent revival of an old subject -- A new underground railroad. From Buzzfeed: Churches Are Readying Homes And Underground Railroads To Hide Immigrants From Deportation Under Trump. Interesting, if true. Excerpt:
Churches across the US are fighting back against the Trump administration’s mandate to ramp up deportations with new sanctuary practices of their own, using private homes in their congregations as shelter and potentially creating a modern-day underground railroad to ferry undocumented immigrants from house to house or into Canada.
Passage to Canada seems like a worthwhile objective. But we need to question the wisdom of opening one's home to someone who has already exhibited a certain disrespect for the law.
