A deep blue city like Portland, Oregon, must have a lot of ordinary needs that the big government spenders ignore in favor of expenditures that signals their virtue, like the high profile welcome wagon for the homeless.
Surely, there are many frustrated taxpayers living there. But they are outnumbered at the ballot box.
In any event, apparently the potholes don't get filled. It's sort of a tragedy of the commons problem. It's the city's job -- the city just didn't do it.
So along came some guerrilla pothole fillers. See The Anarchists Illegally Fixing The Streets Of Portland.
The Portland Anarchist Road Care (PARC) was founded by a small circle of friends in response to the deteriorating road conditions in the Oregon city, which they believed made driving or cycling more costly and dangerous for citizens. They grew tired of waiting for the city to fix this pesky problem, and decided to do it themselves, using a well-known technique called cold patching. The anonymous anarchist have fixed potholes on three Portland blocks so far, but are constantly on the lookout for new crevices to fill.
Certain jobs really should be done by the government. And needless to say, those in government responsible for road repairs are not pleased to be shown up like that.
One more thing: Citizens repairing roads doesn't exactly fit what I perceive anarchy to be. Guerrilla seems more appropriate. But what the hell, they can call themselves anything they like.
