Saturday morning I had the TeeVee tuned in to MSNBC waiting for Hugh Hewitt to come on. And a rerun of Chris Hayes' show was on. He was interviewing a NY Republican Congressman about Trump's speech to law enforcement officers. The part of the speech Hayes replayed was where Trump told the cops not to be so careful about bumping a criminal's head on the car door jam. Hayes did his best to put the Congressman on the spot to defend Trump, who according to Hayes, was encouraging police brutality. Hayes is using an old playbook.
What was it they used to say during the campaign? Oh yeah, the press took Trump literally, but not seriously, whereas Trump’s supporters took him seriously, but not literally.
Jerry Seinfeld may have been the first, or at least the most prominent, comedian to joke about cops and car door jam head bumps many years ago. In fact, Slate is claiming that Trump stole the joke. At least Slate got it.
That said, as disingenuous as this stuff is, it continues to inflame Democrats and probably will as long as Donald Trump is in office. And their aim is to take back the House or Senate in 2018. Will they be successful? It often appears as though Trump's distractions, e.g., the obsession with Sessions, are doing more to help than hinder that movement. But I was among those who didn't think Trump would win the presidency, so what do I know?
