Not long ago we noted that aside from the politic opportunities for the opposition party, the lesson learned from hurricane Katrina was that people loved their pets very much. When responders came to rescue stranded individuals, they refused to take along the person's pet. And the pet owners loved them so much they would rather stay behind and risk their own safety than leave the animals behind.
Compare that with the Irma rescue squads. Now special accommodations are made for the lovable little creatures.
In fact, look at this remarkable indication of how far down this path we've gone. Dozens of dogs abandoned, left unable to escape as Irma bears down. Now they're talking about filing charges against pet owners who leave a pet behind. They seem to isolate those situations in which the pet is chained or fenced. But still, what a contrast.
