The language we use is a growing animal. New words are added to our lexicon all the time. And old words change meaning -- "sex" for example, as an identifier, is now "gender."
Here's another word usage that has changed. The word "media" used to be the plural form of "medium." However, the word has been used so much to refer to a class that it has been transformed into a singular form.
We have none other than Kimberly Strassel in the Wall Street Journal using it as singular in her 9/29/2017 column, as in, "the media has...". With all the proof readers they must have at the WSJ, the usage had to be acceptable to them. So now it's practically official. "Media" is now singular.
P.S. It's a good column and certainly worth reading for the content.
