Proponents of free markets are opposed to Trump's threat to put tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. And Gary Cohn, Trump's chief economic adviser reportedly resigned because of that threat. The man chosen to replace him in that job is Larry Kudlow.
Kudlow is a very smart fellow who isn't afraid of the camera. He would be a good choice, but what about those tariffs? Kudlow's mantra is this:
Free market capitalism is the best path to prosperity!
We don't know all the details about the proposed tariff. It could be a big bluff by the artist of the deal. But if they come to pass, they will probably be targeted like a smart bomb against those countries who are using tariffs themselves to hurt U.S. businesses. One for one, tit for tat. Take that. It might work.
Meanwhile, Trump's two main criteria for his hires seem to be smarts and loyalty. They have to have both. Kudlow has the smarts, but he would have to prove his loyalty. He may be out before he's in. We'll see.
