The worst coffee I've ever tasted -- actually I drank it anyway -- was a cup I purchased from a machine at a Stripes roadside convenience store. Coffee brewer tip: if the coffee gets too hot or stays heated too long, it gets that awful, bitter taste.
I'm in possession of a Starbucks gift card and used it the other day at a Starbucks counter inside a grocery market. I wanted plain black coffee without sugar or milk. The barista recommended an Americano, and I went with that.
So it was black enough, contained no sugar, and contained no milk. But oh, was it bitter! It rivaled the Stripes coffee.
It's no wonder Starbucks customers love those sugary, flavored, coffee drinks. That's what it takes to make bitter coffee palatable.
P.S. The Americano is supposed to be an expresso, however a properly made expresso should not be bitter. Most likely it was over heated. The proper brewing temperature for coffee should be between 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit, but if you prefer the bitter taste, then cook the hell out of it. That should do the trick.
