Mass shootings in two countries, and the reaction by lawmakers is the opposite. For an example of government reaction in New Zealand see New Zealand's Prime Minister Says Gun Reforms Are Coming. "Reforms" means tighter gun control laws.
Move on to Brazil and we see this: Deadly School Shooting Renews Debate on Gun Laws in Brazil:
Shortly after the shooting, Senator Major Olimpio, one of Bolsonaro’s main supporters in Congress, said the tragedy could have been avoided by an armed teacher or school worker. “Disarmament policy has failed,” he later wrote on his Twitter account. “We can’t allow anyone to take advantage of this tragedy to say that disarmament is the solution.”
President Bolsonaro has made it easier for Brazilians to own firearms. And it should be noted, the opposition is trying to damage him for it. However, he should go farther and seek to allow citizens to carry firearms.
Meanwhile, leaders in both countries might do well to consult gun crime researcher Dr. John R. Lott, Jr., founder of Crime Prevention Research Center, for evidence that guns in the hands of law abiding citizens is more likely to save lives than cost lives.
