We touched on this the other day in No easy way to prepare tax return anytime soon. But with tax day here, maybe it's an appropriate subject to revisit.
The idea is that the IRS could provide free software for taxpayers to use in preparing the forms themselves. But there is a lot of money to be made in the industry of tax return preparation. And the industry fought hard to keep the gravy train rolling.
In short, the Taxpayer First Act of 2019 sponsored by John Lewis (D-Georgia) makes it illegal for the IRS to create its own online system of tax filing. A win for the tax prep firms and their lobbyists.
