So I was surfing the web when I clicked on a link to Doane University tries to hide historical blackface photos, punishes librarian who displayed them.
And it immediately sparked a memory of a few scenes from a delightfully depressing movie titled Ghost World in which Steve Buscemi played lonely Seymour who was befriended by a female student named Enid played by Thora Birch.
The scenes were a minor part of the complete story, and it involved an old poster Seymour had retrieved from a fried chicken restaurant that had changed its name with the changing times. The poster was the restaurant's mascot -- a caricature of an African American -- that one might imagine could have been used in the 1950s. See the poster on the wall in this photo.
Enid persuaded Seymour to lend her the poster, and she used it in a student art display, calling it "found art." The reaction was predictable -- see the link above about Doane University for a hint.
As for why the movie was titled "Ghost World," it could be a description of the life those on the outside live -- invisible, like ghosts, to all the cool people.
P.S. The actress sitting on the desk in the photo linked above is Illeana Douglas playing the art teacher.
