There's a movement underway that leans toward a higher level of acceptance in civilian life for people who have been convicted of a crime and have served their time. And there's a compassionate argument to be made for that. But the problem is that too often the time served in prison was advanced education for many of them in their fields of crime. It's tempting to say that juvie is elementary school, county jail is high school, and prison is college. The solution to the problem is to transform prisons into places that don't just restrain but actually rehabilitate the inmates. But that has been a goal for centuries.
Along comes a class of individuals so compassionate they want to give convicts the right to vote while they are doing time.
What we don't need is another class of voters to whom politicians will pander for their votes. Can you imagine campaign rallies in prisons? If so, you can imagine the promises the politicians will make. A guaranteed income; early releases; pardons.
A vote for me will set you free!
