Governor Abbott is boasting about a bill he signed allowing customers to order beer and wine delivered to their homes. That sounds reasonable considering that it might eliminate some drunk drivers going back to the store for one last beer run. And the beer lobby is probably celebrating mightily.
But if the governor and the legislature really wanted to serve the drinking public they would get rid of those package store laws that prohibits the sale of liquor at stores other than liquor stores. Other states allow it, and they don't seem to be having any problems with it.
Efforts this year for a repeal of the law are falling flat -- the package store lobby must be fighting it tooth and nail.
