There really should be a holiday named for Willis Carrier. A day in August would be ideal, as July already has a highly regarded holiday. Carrier was the fellow who invented the modern air conditioner in 1902.
These days, especially in the desert of West Texas where temps are predicted to reach a high of around 100ºF each day this week, an air conditioner is not a luxury. It's a necessity. We happily spend 48 percent of all household energy consumption on them. How did we endure without them?
Those of us old enough can remember sitting in a stiflingly hot un-air conditioned school class room. That's not a time we would want to go back to. But what if there's a blackout? Well, that's a tough situation.
Hopefully, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is right to speculate that peak demand this summer will not exhaust all resources.
