Representative Joaquin Castro put himself in the headlines recently by doxxing San Antonio Trump donors. And now he's getting the blow back with from some of those outed donors.
Large campaign donors can be found at Opensecrets.org, and Mr. Castro is in there, too. And a glance at his section reveals something unexpected. One of the donors listed there is United Way for a donation of $2,900.
I've never been a fan of United Way as it seemed like an unnecessary middleman in the charity process. It doesn't make sense to let someone else decide where one's charitable donations should go. We all probably have our favorite charities, and unless we have money to burn, most of us focus on those.
But political donations? Participation in political campaigns by 501(c)(3) organizations is prohibited by the IRS. The disclaimer at the bottom of OpenSecrets page says this:
The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.
OK, so not the organization outright, it's the employees of United Way who are fans of Mr. Castro. Fair enough. But that doesn't earn any points for United Way.
