It wasn't too long ago that lawmakers were all bent out of shape over cell phone use while driving. Distracted driving was said to be the biggest cause of accidents.
Well, good news. Researchers discovered that speeding is the main cause of crashes. This resulted from a study of drivers in Canada and Texas by the University of Waterloo. See Speed identified as the best predictor of car crashes. Excerpt:
Researchers at the University of Waterloo examined data from 28 million trips for possible links between four bad driving behaviours – speeding, hard braking, hard acceleration and hard cornering – and the likelihood of crashes.
The earlier focus on cell phones was probably because of the annoyance factor more than safety.
In any event, drivers inclined to speed should probably opt out of any insurance company's offer to allow them to monitor the driver's habits with some inboard monitoring system.
