September 17, 1787, was the day delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. And while Constitution Day isn't a work holiday, we should celebrate it anyway.
It's a great constitution, and it will continue to serve us well if we let it. There are despotic regimes out there with great constitutions that aren't followed. The strength of a constitution depends on the people respecting it and our government following it.
Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.
