One of absurd aspects of the Michael Flynn case is the recent suggestion by Federal Judge Sullivan that Flynn could be in contempt of court for perjury because Flynn pleaded guilty but later withdrew that plea.
If there's anything good to come from this case it should be a change in the law that requires a defendant to plea guilty in order to accept a plea bargain. Most criminal cases end with a plea bargain. And it's conceivable that an innocent person could plea guilty in order to avoid the expense and hardship of a trial, not to mention the possibility that an eloquent prosecutor with circumstantial evidence could convince a jury that the person is guilty.
The law needs to be changed. A person should be able to accept a plea bargain without having to convince a judge that he/she actually committed the crime.
